MBR Membrane Modules
Flat Sheet & Hollow Fiber
Submerged membrane bioreactor modules for municipal wastewater treatment, industrial effluent recovery, and water reuse applications. Available in flat sheet (MF) and hollow fiber (UF) configurations.
Advanced MBR Technology for Water Reuse
TL Environment's MBR Membrane Module series combines biological treatment and membrane filtration in a single, compact process. By replacing the secondary clarifier with a submerged membrane, MBR systems achieve superior effluent quality — suitable for direct reuse or as pre-treatment for downstream RO systems in water recycling and ZLD applications.
The flat sheet series uses a PVDF microfiltration membrane (0.2 μm nominal pore size) mounted in open-frame cassettes with air scouring for fouling control. The hollow fiber series uses a PVDF ultrafiltration membrane (0.04 μm) in pressurized module housings with intermittent air backwash.
Both series are manufactured to strict dimensional tolerances to ensure compatibility with standard MBR tank configurations. Cassette and module replacement can be performed without draining the bioreactor, minimizing operational downtime.

Two Module Types for Different Applications
Flat Sheet MBR (FS Series)
PVDF flat sheet membranes mounted in open-frame stainless steel cassettes. Air scouring via diffusers below the cassette maintains membrane surface flux. Preferred for municipal wastewater and high-suspended-solids industrial feeds.
- Pore size: 0.2 μm (MF)
- PVDF membrane material
- Stainless steel frame
- Air scouring fouling control
- Flux: 15–25 LMH
- MLSS: up to 15,000 mg/L
Hollow Fiber MBR (HF Series)
PVDF hollow fiber UF membranes in cylindrical module housings. Intermittent air backwash and relaxation cycles maintain flux. Preferred for industrial applications requiring tighter particle rejection and compact module footprint.
- Pore size: 0.04 μm (UF)
- PVDF hollow fiber membrane
- Cylindrical module housing
- Air backwash fouling control
- Flux: 20–35 LMH
- MLSS: up to 12,000 mg/L

MBR Performance Advantages
Submerged Membrane Design
Both flat sheet and hollow fiber modules operate in submerged configuration, eliminating the need for high-pressure feed pumps and reducing energy consumption compared to pressurized membrane systems.
Effluent Quality for Reuse
MBR permeate meets Class A+ reuse standards in most jurisdictions. Turbidity <0.2 NTU, TSS <1 mg/L, and pathogen removal suitable for agricultural, industrial, and indirect potable reuse.
Compact Footprint
MBR systems require 30–50% less footprint than conventional activated sludge + secondary clarifier configurations, making them ideal for urban sites and industrial parks with limited space.
High MLSS Tolerance
Designed for operation at MLSS concentrations of 8,000–15,000 mg/L, enabling higher volumetric loading and smaller bioreactor volumes.
Chemical Cleaning Compatibility
Membranes are compatible with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and citric acid CIP protocols. Maintenance cleaning intervals of 1–4 weeks depending on feed water quality.
Modular and Scalable
Cassette-based flat sheet design allows capacity expansion by adding cassette units without system shutdown. Hollow fiber modules are rack-mounted for easy replacement.
